They have much to gain in security, from so little effort on their part.

I think what was at issue was their questioning the wisdom of how we perceive security, ours and theirs. They thought we were decreasing rather than increasing their security by going into Iraq. They are entitled to their opinion on what actions most enhance their security. You are right, of course, that they allowed themselves to become helpless militarily and accept security on our dime and are thus stuck with their opinions being devalued.
