No Democratic candidate has lost the nomination after winning competitive contests in both Iowa and New Hampshire - a feat accomplished just twice, by President Jimmy Carter in 1980 and former Vice President Al Gore in 2000. One of my nephews digs up these little facts about sports teams to pass on to announcers at games. Things like "No left hander has ever struck out twice on tuesdays in this stadium". It's all a matter of just sending statistics through a computer until the magic number of 1 appears. The trick is to describe it in a way that makes it sound significant even though such data mining generally has no validity. TP
