In the Seventies, the SC (IMO) wrongly decided a case brought jointly by the Dems and Repubs to permit States to ban so-called "fusion voting", i.e., the process where a minor Party --- like the Conservative Party in NY --- can nominate as it's candidate a candidate from another Party (such as the Republicans).

This is one of the main processes by which a smaller Party can grow and gain strength. If --- as in the example above --- the Republican candidate won the general election by a close margin... he might know that his margin of victory was provided by the Conservative Party... and then be sympathetic to some of their goals, to keep their support the next go-round.

By such means, smaller Parties may grow --- because people don't feel they are 'wasting' their votes when they register for a new or small Party.

It was by exactly such means that the Republican Party emerged from the Whigs.

By enforcing restrictive, Cartel-like election rules, we have short-circuited the evolution and growth of Democratic expression in the US.
