WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- U.S. consumer confidence rose to an 18-month high in January, but consumers are still nervous about finding or losing their job, the Conference Board reported Tuesday.

The board's consumer confidence index rose to 96.8 in January from a revised 91.7 in December. Read the full release.

Economists had expected the index to rise to about 98.1, according to a survey conducted by CBS MarketWatch. See Economic Calendar.

The expectations index increased to a 20-month high of 108.1 from 103.3, reflecting growing optimism about the economic recovery.

The present situation index increased to 80.0 from 74.3.

Bonds welcomed the worse-than-expected report, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury falling from 4.14 percent just before the announcement to 4.09 percent. See Bond Report.

"Consumer confidence is now at its highest level since July 2002," said Lynn Franco, head of the board's consumer research unit. "Growing optimism about the overall health of the economy continues to bolster consumers' short-term outlook."
