All this seems somewhat moot, inasmuch as Microsoft apparently is not planning a split anytime soon (judging by both its various actions to keep the stock price down, as well as an earlier post by a Microsoft employee stating so in no uncertain terms).

However, for what it may be worth, here is the information you requested, at least as per my records. Microsoft's last split was announced after the close on 11/12/96. MSFT closed at 141.75 on 11/12, [and at 145 on 11/13]. The trailing earnings/share through the September 1996 quarter were approximately 3.60/share. That would have made the trailing P/E approximately 39.4 at the time of announcement.

As Microsoft continues to defer or otherwise push out more and more of its revenues and earnings, the P/E (trailing and leading) becomes less and less meaningful. IMHO
