Consumer optimism at 18-month high
Conference Board says Americans still fretful about jobs

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- U.S. consumer confidence rose to an 18-month high in January, but consumers are still nervous about finding or losing their job, the Conference Board reported Tuesday.

The board's consumer confidence index rose to 96.8 in January from a revised 91.7 in December. Read the full release.

Economists had expected the index to rise to about 98.1, according to a survey conducted by CBS MarketWatch. See Economic Calendar.
