Japanese companies on the mainland help drive the recovery at home.

Not for the first time, Japanese manufacturers are busy engineering an export-led recovery. Here's the difference: In 2004, much of the scaffolding for an economic turnaround is being erected in China.

Trade statistics released Monday by the Finance Ministry show Japan's combined exports to mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan reached 13.7 trillion yen in 2003, surpassing those to the United States for the first time.
