When asked about their plans for EDGE, Arun Sarin (VOD) states "We are a W-CDMA company". He goes on to say that the only place where they are looking at EDGE is in the few places where they do not have 3G spectrum (like Hungary).

A couple of highlights....

- There were a couple of questions about VOD's W-CDMA timing/plans....each time Sarin reiterated that they were making progress and that their plans to launch in the October timeframe are unchanged.

- J-Phone's sub growth was up but their ARPU accelerated to the downside. It is pretty clear that they had to cut prices to try and get back share. Management made an interesting remark at one point, basically saying that they are in a holding pattern in Japan until they can get a W-CDMA platform/services up and running.

- An upgraded subscriber to Vodafone Live has a 7% higher ARPU than a sub upgrade to a non-Live handset (specifically mentioned Nokia). The Nokia handset provides "a solid mid single digit increase to ARPU"....so the 7% is on top of that. There are a total of 4.5 million Live subs.

After listening to this call, I think a Vodafone buy of AWE would be as good for Qualcomm (and perhaps better) as Docomo buying AWE. It definitely sounds like they are going to push W-CDMA as soon as possible....which means as soon as the handsets are ready. The fact that Qualcomm seems to have partnered closely with VOD to supply chipsets probably pushes my rooting interest towards them over Docomo.
