There is support for what you suggest. I know a woman with a "Free Burma" bumper sticker on her car. I'm sure the US position is strongly affected by China, both of which try to avoid ruffling each other’s feathers whenever possible. The US already has an adversarial position with China over Taiwan and North Korea. I think it is an issue of priorities rather than merit.
