You raise a very important issue. It is the battle for the middle that decides the Presidency and in NH it went Bushes way. In 2000, the Independents wanted McCain. Once McCain failed to get the Repub nomination then it was a toss up between Gore and Bush. And Bush got a majority of the Independent s and the popular vote based on incumbency/continuity (Clinton) versus the unknown Bush
