the USSR will not be the last modern state to be bankrupted by its military costs. No matter how one analyzes these numbers one cannot help but label them "unsustainable"

One difference: This time, there is nobody to stop the superpower in question, if it decides that it would like to just attack, conquer, and live off other countries' riches instead of going bankrupt nicely, just like all those empires before it in history -g-
