you're talking about personal and political pride over statesmanship.

You don't give the left an opportunity to dump on you. You keep up a front, and fix it within. Every time we have had an outside investigation of the CIA it has only made it worse. "personal and political" is get reelected! You can't do shit if you don't. Churchill and Roosevelt weren't "Statesmen." The muddled through and won. The guys that end up being called "Statesmen" are usually the losers.
