Wireless telephony unsecure!

Scrapps posted a long news item, including this:

Two government agencies are sending a warning to wireless users--particularly federal employees--about the security and privacy risks posed by different modes of wireless transmission.

The National Institute of Science and Technology and the National Security Agency have been evaluating wireless systems based on AMPS, IS-136 time division multiple access (TDMA), IS-95 code division multiple access (CDMA) and GSM technologies to assess possible risks to users, Telephony has learned.


Perhaps you missed the news that several of the cryptographic algorithms which are supposed to protect digital cellular (specifically the American TDMA and CDMA systems) have been broken. Check out this Counterpane Systems page:

Of course, everyone knows that any boob with an old TV set (before they removed the high end of the UHF channels) or slightly modified scanner can hear princes and senators on analog cellular (AMPS). Even though listening is against the law....
