I am afraid this falls into the category of pardonable lies. If he stonewalled, it would practically be an omission that something was amiss, and there was a legitimate privacy question involved. It is not true that "a lie is a lie". Did you pretend to your children that their presents came from Santa? Would you deceive your wife in order to throw her a surprise party? Do you pretend to be glad to see relatives when you are sorry that they showed up at your door? Would you lie to a terrorist in order to save a life? There are various situations, and some lies are innocuous, and some are justified, and some are worse than others........
