The Electoral College is not crazy. Those who favor direct election should just consider one scenario. A really close national election as far as popular votes. We've had a few. Then consider that every state in the country becomes a Florida 2000. Every vote in every precinct in the entire country is up for challenge. And consider that a state with a lax voter registration process that lets thousands of people who shouldn't be voting actually vote, could affect not only their state but the entire national election. All somebody has to do is rig the voting machines in one major city to possibly change the whole election. Yes, it can be done in the EC system -- Mayor Daley and Kennedy are the most likely candidates -- but just imagine if that could be done in any city in the country.

The crooked politicians and the lawyers would have a field day. And it could be months while we waited for all the challenges in all the states to be resolved.

You should thank your stars for the Electoral College.
