I have been arguing since the beginning, without any apparent success, that much of the divide is different perceptions of threat. If you're scared, you're on one side. If you're not scared, you're on the other.

I would also add in Kagan's metaphor of the bear in the woods. If you are threatened by a scary bear in the woods, the idea of going on a bear hunt strikes you quite differently if you only have a knife, than if you have a proper bear hunting gun. In fact, if you only have a knife you may decide the bear isn't so threatening after all - unless circumstances force you to change your mind.

The Europeans only have knives, only America has the gun.
