Gold under $400 an ounce

Meanwhile, the prospect of a higher dollar in anticipation of a hike in interest rates sent gold futures prices to their lowest level in seven weeks. A stronger dollar would make gold more expensive to buy for foreign investors.

The February gold contract ended down $16.10 at $398.50 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the lowest close on a NYMEX contract since Nov. 26.

Crude futures fell for a third straight session, to close under $33 per barrel, pressured by an apparent united stance among OPEC member against a reduction in the cartel's output quota.

On Nymex, crude for March delivery fell 81 cents to close at $32.81 per barrel. It's the first time this year that a front-month contract has closed under $33, although the March contract itself did touch an intraday low of $32.53 two weeks ago.
