No, the New South which was more liberal under Carter and Clinton has been usurped by the Christian Coalition hard retro white right-wingers who want to keep blacks and women in their old places.

So far it has worked for the GOP, an unholy alliance of white collar crooks, polluters and anti Abortion rights forces. But this year the lock on the south will be broken. Kerry-Edwards should be able to win at least one or two key southern states. That with New Hampshire and a few others they should win is enough to handily beat Bush.
