GENEVA, Switzerland -- STMicroelectronics NV is predicting it will spend $1.6 billion on capital expenditure in 2004, according to a Dow Jones report that cited Pasquale Pistorio, the firm's president and chief executive officer, as its source. Pistorio also told analysts in Geneva attending a conference on the company's financial results that ST would transfer 60 percent of its 6-inch silicon wafer production from Europe and the U.S. to Singapore, according to the report. "This will bring annualized cost savings of about $120 million after taxes," Pistorio is quoted as saying. The production would be either kept on 6-inch wafers or moved to the more efficient 8-inch size, the report said.
