Snow belted
A fierce lake-effect snow band clobbered Oswego County, dropping more than 4 feet of snow on Parish, causing hundreds of accidents and forcing police to shut highways. This, in the county whose name is synonymous with rugged winter weather.
At the height of Thursday's blast, in the five hours between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., Fulton received 22 inches of snow. The city's total for the storm was at least 29 inches as of Thursday night.
That was, comparatively speaking, a dusting stacked up against Parish. That community on Interstate 81 got 54 inches in 31.5 hours as of 11 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Thursday was the second time Fulton was socked in less than a week. Last Friday, 38 inches of snow fell in 24 hours, prompting a snow emergency that lasted into Saturday.
Nearly 6 feet of snow — 71.5 inches — have fallen on Fulton since the night of Jan. 22.
This is the kind of weather that makes Tug Hill locals finally put away their short-sleeved shirts and button their coats. It also makes southerns shat their pants.
