I would not exactly agree with that. The US, as the leading sponsor/founder of the UN, has a vested interest in the organization abiding and advancing its charter throughout the world.

If anyone told the UN to "fuck off", it was Chirac when he threatened to veto that second UNSC vote last spring, effectively killing it.

He essentially told the UN, "sure we can agree in principle that Saddam is in material breach, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let you destroy my cozy economic relationship with him"..
