Taiwan's wealth can compete with Canada's. Think about how many wealthiest people live in Canada as opposed to Taiwan. I just had a trip to Canada this summer, when compared with a trip to Taiwan a couple years ago, it is not surprising that I spent a lot less in Canada. In terms of prosperity, there is no comparison, Taiwan exceeds Canada. In terms of "real income" (net), I believe Taiwan is better than Canada. So, please adjust you misconception regarding Taiwan as cheap, similar to Japan in 60s. IMHO Phil C. Lee
