I'd say get a side by side shotgun with 2 triggers, the cheap kind. Buy it used, saw the barrels off to 18 and 1/4 inches. 00Buck in one barrel, #2 steel goose loads in the other. #2 steel will open a 2" hole half way through a person at 40' but not ruin your drywall. 00buck will go through your drywall and studs and still kill.

For a pistole' you may want to look at a Ruger .22. Regular cheap .22s to plink and a magnum cylinder for at home use.
