PC Shipments Surge In Latin America
(08/14/97; 3:40 p.m. EDT)
By Semiconductor Business News

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- PC shipments in Latin America grew 19.8 percent in
the second quarter to 799,131 units, compared with 666,895 units in the
same period last year, Dataquest said Thursday.

The market researcher said the strong growth was due, in part, to an
increase in mobile computer and PC server shipments in the region.

Mobile computer unit sales in Latin America grew 64 percent in the second
quarter, while the PC server market surged 221 percent in the quarter,
Dataquest said. Brazil led all countries in the region with 288,000 PC
systems shipped in the quarter. Mexico was the No. 2 country with
164,000 PC units shipped.

"The enhanced infrastructure, such as better connectivity and availability of
Internet access, and an emerging new business culture that is realizing the
true value of mobile computers, are promoting the mobile industry in Latin
America," said Luis Anavitarte, lead research analyst for Dataquest's Latin
America Quarterly PC Statistics program.

"Local vendors in Brazil continue to grow and affect the overall market
share of international brand vendors in the country. This trend may inspire
entrepreneurs and begin to appear in other countries as well."

In the second quarter, Houston's Compaq extended its lead as the No. 1
vendor in the region with its market share growing three points to 17.9
percent, or 143,261 system shipments. Acer moved into a tie with IBM for
second place. Both have 11.4 percent market share, according to
Dataquest.
