Nichia ordered to pay Y20 bil to inventor for chip patent

TOKYO — The Tokyo District Court on Friday ordered Nichia Corp to pay an unprecedented 20 billion yen to the inventor of a key semiconductor device for the transfer of patent rights.

The award to Shuji Nakamura, a professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara who developed the blue-color light-emitting diode (LED) while working at Anan, Tokushima Prefecture-based Nichia, is the largest ever in Japan for the transfer of patent rights. (Kyodo News)...
