Cromwell too, would have been reacting to what he'd describe as a fascism stemming from norman and high-church repression of old anglo-saxon principles, had he known the term .... and reacting, of course, using fascist methods, but 'in a good cause' .... didn't he have a war with the dutch early on, largely over who would control the slave trade? .... didn't accept much for backtalk from local saxons, either, militarist governments are like that ..... actually i think if you take the term 'fascist' back to his time, you can take 'Old Left' as well - wasn't there a group called the Levellers, that Engels or somebody later cites as early socialists ... and some of them were the origin of the term 'Diggers', as self-applied by certain sixties hipnoids?
Yes, not a great deal separates Monroe's 'Manifest Destiny' from Hitler's 'Lebensraum', in application, or even in much of its contemporary rhetoric ...... long before Monroe became president, just after negociating the purchase of Louisiana, he made it clear that either the Floridas or Tejas would be next, it was plain that they were both in the grand plan, and that they weren't the limits either .... from at least the 1790s there had been 'Mexican Associations' dedicated to conquest of the south, and it sure wasn't due to an affinity for off-white catholics .... At least a year ago, probably two, you posted a number of sites on the iroquois constitution, so i know you love this stuff ..... but all those old labels are pretty useless, 'left/right', 'fascist/socialist', 'liberal/conservative', etc .... you wonder why we can't come up with new ones that better apply, we just recycle old ones ..... and so few of them, really - whatever happened to 'papist'? -g- ..... cheers |
