Ivory Coast's weavers bemoan cost of war
By Katie Nguyen

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARAHERE, Ivory Coast, (Reuters) - In the mud-and-thatch village of Warahere in northern Ivory Coast, a dozen men sit in the fading sun, weaving thick threads of blue, green, pink and yellow cotton as others watch.

Before civil war broke out in the West African nation, this village square would have been crammed with hundreds of men weaving and clusters of women sewing long strips of cloth.

But the conflict has driven culture-hungry tourists away and now instead of buses full of camera-clicking foreigners, jeeps packed with rebels clutching assault rifles roam the roads of Ivory Coast's arid north.
