thanks, i've tried that. no dice. the floppy is "chewing" trying to open that particular file. but wouldn't.
the full message i get is: xxx.xls cannot be accessed. the file may be read-only or you may be trying to accessa a read only locations. or the server the document is stored on may not be responding RETRY, CANCEL. when i check properties on the file, it says ARCHIVE. larry
