I'd agree that capitalism does not have any legitimate competitors for a system of economic orgainization, but what type of capitalism? The three main forms today are the Anglo-American market capitalism (often called "late capitalism" by neo-Marxist cultural theorists), the bank-based capitalism of continental Europe, and the state corporatist capitalism of SE Asia and Japan.

The differences between these systems is mainly a matter of political rather than economic organization. For example, the bank-based systems of Europe tend to promote less class mobility. Could this possibly be the goal of these societies?

Most capitalists (except for a small group of Paleoconservatives and Paleolibertarians) would agree with the need for a social safety net for those unable to provide for themselves through no fault of their own. Should society ensure that no one "should just suffer"? Not only is suffering subjective, but to ensure that no one might suffer, we may have to severely constrain the personal liberty of others. I'm not convinced that this is acceptable in many cases, and I tend to agree with Nozick on the preferability of a "night watchman state". For those who are able, but unwilling to work, suffering could be the best motivator that society has at its disposal.
