If they were doing a story on the celebration of Christmas, they would put the microphone in front of some celebrant who would say that Jesus was given birth in a manger by the virgin, Mary, and we would think nothing of it, seems to me.

Two problems: First, they were talking about the foundation of Mecca, the city, not the foundation of the Hajj. They said, how was Mecca founded? Mecca is a real live city with a history, which I was expected to hear something of. Instead I got the Koran presented as historical fact.

Second, I have never heard them give a mike to any Christian to describe Christian dogma as historical fact. Certainly not without a distancing device such as "the faithful believe that..." or "the Bible says that..." or some such thing. Here, the Koranic story was simply presented as fact. Maybe they have done this for Christians sometime - but I have never heard it if they have. Frankly, I get the impression that the BBC doesn't like Christianity much.
