you are right technically, but I have to point out a fact that the majority of graduate students in science across the US campus are foreign born.

Do you have any data? I would be curious to know what the real number is.

I think it may be so in some fields but not others. Also I should make a very BIG point of clarification. I would suggest that although you may see more foreign born, the majority are american citizen or permanent resident with green card, or wind up that way,, and not here on student visas.

It's often called the brain drain. Have you ever heard of it? Fact is, the West owns a monopoly not just in science, but in graduate education in general. Spending capital on all the good brains turns out to be a good ROI.

This is I think is the big variable as to why we have an economic lead and likely the only way out of our current conundrum. We're able to innovate faster and create demand for new goods. When we can't innovate as faster than we can consume, we get the tech bubble and the deflationary bubble we're in right now.
