I don't know a single Vietnam Vet who came home with clear feelings about why they were there, what he did there or anything else. In fact most of them came back with a haunting sense of guilt and shame.

That was a very-very screwed-up war beginning with Johnson's escalation which was based on a completely fabricated event. After that the Halliburton types moved in to make billions and the draftees sent into the bush quickly realized that as heroic as they tried to be, their efforts were without any noble purpose except to get out alive. When guerilla terrorists would sneak in and kill their buddies they took revenge. Oftentimes that revenge meant wiping out an entire suspect village regardless of whether they knew any perps were there.

While the Army is careful not to let this happen anymore it did happen in Nam, many times. Those atrocities proved that we were on the wrong track. Our brave soldiers were put in positions where they felt they had to massacre everyone in their path just to defend themselves. Also, it's not as if the North Vietnamese ever did anything to us. The whole war was just based on a thinktank chickenhawk strategy extrapolation which came up the the "domino theory". That theory said that if we didn't stop communists in North Vietnam it would apread throughout Asia. Well we pulled out and it didn't spread, did it? 750,000 lives later, so much for that theory. Reminds me of Bush's WMD scare tactics, just another lie used to start a big costly war which the politically connected few profited greatly from.
