=DJ TALES OF THE TAPE: Spending Lifts Cable Gear Makers

By Ellen Sheng
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--For long-suffering suppliers to cable operators, the drought appears to be over.

Just six months ago, manufacturers of various electronic gear used by cable companies seemed doomed to an austere diet. Most cable companies were finished with their multi-billion-dollar network upgrades and corporate scandals forced Adelphia Communications Corp. (ADELQ) and Charter Communications Corp. (CHTR) to put their upgrades on hold.

Since then, situations at Adelphia and Charter have improved, allowing the two operators to pour money back into network upgrades. And after a period of restructuring, international customers are starting to come back into the fold. To top it off, satellite competition is pushing cable companies to invest in newfangled services such as voice-over-Internet-protocol, or VOIP, video-on-demand, digital video recorders and high definition TV.

It seems the good times are rolling again and stock prices, many close to 52-week highs, are reflecting that new optimism. [ARRS SMART MONEY]
