Well then you know first hand that being poor doesn't kill you. So why suggest that I'm ready to let people die for capitalism? Are you still feeling sorry for that guy who couldn't sell his own blood because it was too low in protein? Or could it be that you live in fear you'll wind up back there? Now that's what I'd call "poor", having money and being afraid of losing it.

So did you get out of your situation with help from a government subsidy, your parents or did you just go out and get a job?

I'm not defending past welfare programs,

Yes, you are. You still think we need to keep them because you don't trust that the free market will provide for:

for there really are people who can't help themselves.

What happened to these people prior to the New Deal and The Great Society programs? People who truly were unable to take care of themselves were taken care of by their families, communities and churches. Now we give them a government stipend and institutionalize them and call it kindness. Have you ever been to one of those places? I've been to a lot of them because a great many of my clients are private non-profit groups that try to provide alternatives to the government funded warehouses.

You contradict yourself.

and I believe in people earning what they get.

I also believe that unfettered capitalism exists only for profit,

It exists because people making choices every single day as to what they want to spend their own money on create an efficient system that fulfills those needs because on the other side of those needs exists someone who wants to make a profit providing it to them. Look at that, I took the evil out of profit. Do you enter the market to make a loss or a profit?

People spending their own money make decent choices on the whole even while they make numerous mistakes along the way. It's when people are spending other people's money that things get completely out of wack and market distortions occur. Every complaint about bubbles and such on this thread and all the others can be traced back to someone spending someone else's money.

and ways need to be found to give it a human face

This is what various socialist countries would say, they even put this exact phrase in front of a few communist systems, "Socialism with a Human face". Tell me, how does a bureaucracy have a human face? Don't say that socialism (in any form) can be conducted without bureaucracy, it can't, only a free market system can exist without a large bureaucracy because it is basically everyone acting in their own self interest, not a group of government drones or elites deciding what people need. Why do you think you need someone else to decide what is good for you and what you need? You seem perfectly able to decide these things for yourself (maybe not?).
