Having finished a cleaning and transplanting project for a sizable blackberry patch yesterday, I'm enjoying watching some much needed rain fall today. Snugly tucked into my domicile with an array of felines and a chirping parrot, it is a good time to peruse the net. While following several disparate threads of interest this morning (Pacific Coast Time), the one of interest to this forum involved Iraq. There was the article by Basham from the Cato Institute ( cato.org ) that reminded me of the classified State Department report from shortly before the war. It doubted the fostering democracy argument put forth by the neo-cons, and loudly trumpeted by the liberal hawks ( Hitchens, Friedman, et al). There was an interesting article from Lebanon that said the proper analog for establishing democracy in Iraq was not Germany or Japan, but South Korea ( It only took four decades, '53 to '93 see dailystar.com.lb ). And finally, a couple of pieces each seeing only a narrow perspective. The Arab perspective was presented by an individual with an English name in Why Is The West Afraid Of The Arabs? - aljazeerah.info , and juxtaposed by Arab Delusions & Arab Defeats - americandaily.com .

What I got from the last two articles was not what either author intended. It's true that many Muslims believe that their belief system is superior, and destined to rule the world. It's also true that a hard line faction in this country believe it's prudent to establish an iron-fisted American hegemony. Neither of these delusions, nor the morally bankrupt befuddlement of the liberal hawks has any chance of success. But in pursuit of these illusory dreams, many will die.
