I have known that Iraq would be taken out, if the opportunity arose, for years. What seems to you to come from left field, or to originate with the Bushies, has been a known policy option for a long time. "Regime change" in Iraq was made official US policy in '98, under Clinton. The hope was to encourage internal rebellion, but that was not working so well. People have been questioning how long sanctions could go on, given Saddam's propensity to divert oil proceeds allowed under the humanitarian exemption, rather than buying adequate food and medicine, thus causing thousands of deaths among children each year. Saddam has been firing upon those enforcing the no- fly zones for years. It was clear that containment was a mess, and always an option to take care of the mess once and for all.......
