<<97% of the local economy is in the hands of ... oh, you know the rest.>>

There is no question nor doubt about that. Even the existing government and economists realize this. Chinese New Year celebrations in many cities this year. Even the Muslim party realizes the importance of the Chinese to Indonesian economy.

Contrast this to the US darling and trained Suharto. During his era, his cronies controlled most aspects of the economy in the utmost corruption way. Indonesian economy was stiffled for three decades, much like Ferdinand's Phillippines. Suharto's relatives even wanted to take over East Timor for themselves. United Nations stopped them. Small parallel but is precedessor to GWBush taking over Iraq oil for his conglomerate. And the majority of people believe whatever the power in charge tells them, here today in the US or back then in Indonesia. Who says US leaders cannot learn the corrupt ways of the third world countries. Who says a highly educated society would know the difference what propaganda is fed to them?

The culmination of Suharto's regime was the rampage against the Chinese population in late 1990's. There was mere lip service investigation on that rioting and looting on Chinese businesses, and the forced sex rampage. Some reports suggested it was the last hurrah days or party time for Suharto's goons to get whatever they could loot before they lost their jobs. It occured after Suharto had lost the election and just before transfer to the new administration.

Philippines Ferdinand and Indonesia Suharto are two of the best US trained corrupted leaders in Southeast Asia.
