Baoshan is China's largest overseas investor

SHANGHAI - The Shanghai-based Baoshan Iron & Steel Co Ltd launched a project with a Brazilian mining firm on Monday to build a giant joint venture in Brazil, which will be China's largest-ever overseas direct investment.

The Chinese government has approved the project, which was launched with Brazil's biggest mining company, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD). The joint venture will be established in Saint Louis, said Xu Lejiang, vice-president of Baoshan.

However, the company did not reveal details of the investment figures or the production capability of the project.

CVRD is the world's third-largest diversified mining company, with interests in iron ore, gold, bauxite, manganese and potash mining.

Baoshan's total sales exceeded 110 billion yuan (about US$13.4 billion) last year. It has announced that it wants to achieve an annual sales revenue of 150 billion yuan by 2010, putting the company in the ranks of the world's top steelmakers.
