They had no "knowledge" of WMDs, they had no knowledge of any "gathering threat," because there was none to have any knowledge of at the time.

Sam, are you seriously demanding that the President make decisions using only 20/20 hindsight? Every intelligence service in the world, including the French and the Germans, for gosh sakes, was 100% sure that Saddam had WMDs.

Personally I won't be sure that he didn't until I learn who destroyed what when and what went to Syria during the 14 mos. advance warning Saddam got. Saddam had both had and used WMDs. Saddam was forming alliances of convenience with terrorist groups by the carload - Abu Nidal, Ansar al Islam, Uday's Fedayeen, his own homebrew crew at Salman Pak. His intent towards America was baneful. Iraq was the only country to openly rejoice at Sept 11th. Do you really think the President should have just waited and seen what Iraq chose to do after sanctions collapsed (it wouldn't have taken much longer) and Saddam reclaimed his full revenues and freedom of action, triumphant?
