"Until China is self sustaining is the better answer"

So far China seems to be following the Japanese recipe of economic co-dependence with mostly the USA. There are similarities with Japan - China is lacking many key natural resources. Japan has never reached a point that could be described as self-sustaining.

It does appear that it is in the best current self-interest of Japan and China to support the US buck but it seems like being in a leaky boat - OK as long as you bail like mad (intervene and buy US treasuries). The longer term prognosis is shaky.

I think China has a different long term strategy than simply copying Japan however. Right now, more than anything else, they want the US know how. It could even be that they realize things are going to hell in a hand basket for the US dollar, they may even be willing to contribute to it's demise eventually, but just want as much technological transfer as possible first.
