I would also like to add. It may be a "so what" to a government bureaucrat if a town dies, but to the local people who live there it is a big deal, and they should be afforded the freedom to determine their own fate.

Why can't a local town work with an airline and create a successful new airport in the process. So a few companies make some money and provide some jobs in the process, so some EU bureaucrat loses influence and power. Happens all the time, it's called freedom. I say instead of "township creative destruction" we look for more opportunities for "bureaucratic creative destruction".
