The greatest threat from "gas to liquids" conversion technology is that it could add significant additional supplies to worldwide liquids markets from huge untapped natural gas fields.

Natural gas fields typically need to be located relatively close to markets with significant consumer demand before they can be developed since transportation networks involve expensive pipelines and compressors. IOW, you can't simply pull up a truck or a tanker and say "fill 'er up", like you can with an oil field development!

There are currently hundreds of huge natural gas fields around the world that cannot be developed economically because the transportation costs of getting the gas to market are prohibitively expensive. Therefore, gas-to-liquids technology, once rolled out commercially on a large scale, could realistically place a overall cap on worldwide crude and product prices.

IMO, "gas to liquids" conversion technology represents one of the biggest potential threats to the worldwide oil industry, and it's just a matter of time before we'll begin to notice a significant impact on liquids supplies and prices.
