gold, I am in favor of a supercollider project and more funding of basic research, in general. The idea that we are going to stop learning about the universe because it's too expensive is very short sighted. Besides, it is less expensive in dollars and much less in human misery than the Iraq adventure.

Unfortunately, the Waxahatchie selection was such a boondoggle that this thing was DOA. I live in Texas, so I am not prejudiced against the state. But NASA comes to Texas because LBJ is Prez and the SuperCollider comes to Texas because the real Bush is Prez and I think Wright was Speaker at the time. That just looks too danged fishy to Illinois and other states that were in the running for the project. Now, my home state of California has no gripe, as it would be silly to put a lot of money into the ground on the fault lines. I know you can't get politics out of grants, but on something like this, selecting the best location is important for every citizen. Texas may have been the best location, but nobody in the scientific community made that case at the time.
