Hi Cricket,

I don't have good answers to your questions, but perhaps I could share with your some resources that would provide some leads.

1) There are many schools of thoughts re. what is the best time to buy the stock in case of a split--before or after and when. I myself am not a believer of any those schools as I could never discern a reliable correlation pattern, especially in the case of MSFT.

However, you could gather the historical split dates of this stock and plot against the closing stock prices and get a crude picture.
The splits dates should be available from Microsoft's Home Site and historical data of most stocks are available from:

options-iri.com Just click on "quotes" and select the options re. dates/symbol. etc.

I think the data base at this link is quite complete, although I haven't checked on stock prices too far back.

Also, take consideration of other major product news/cycles and macro events at or near the date of splits in order to to calibrate your correlations.

2) With regard to margin calls, I haven't had the experience of dealing with this although all my accounts are set up as marginable ones except the IRA. I do LEAPS calls, both buy and sell, but only use my margin priviledge when making major portfolio changes on a very transient basis.

Perhaps some other folks on the thread could offer your their experiences and thoughts.

Good trading,
Ibexx
