*re:...look to the home.* Bingo.** I have a friend in the bay area who moved into a particular district based on the public school system's superior reputation. Only afterward did he and his wife find a research study that showed the students did so well in that district (on average) because they had a strong home-based support system: Stanford professors, etc. who both expected a lot from their kids and would do whatever it took to fix a problem (e.g. tutoring). They also discovered that kids of single-parent and/or economically-disadvantaged families in the district did just as poorly as in supposedly-inferior school systems. We, on the other hand, home-school our kids.
