RF Micro Devices Provides Strategic Update at Thomas Weisel Partners Tech 2004 Conference Thursday February 5, 10:17 am ET
GREENSBORO, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 5, 2004--RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD - News), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, presented yesterday at the Thomas Weisel Partners Tech 2004 Conference in San Francisco, Calif. During the conference, Dean Priddy, chief financial officer, and Doug DeLieto, director of investor relations, provided a strategic update, which included the following comments. ADVERTISEMENT "We expect our sales in the handset market in 2004 will increase in excess of the rate of growth of the overall handset market," Priddy commented. "In doing so, we will continue to increase our dollar content per handset manufactured. Our dollar content per handset manufactured has increased by approximately 40 percent since 2001. That will continue as we bring more functionality into power amplifiers and take share in cellular transceivers, which is a market that is ready for consolidation." Dollar content per handset manufactured is calculated by dividing RFMD's annual handset sales by the total number of handsets manufactured each year.
Priddy further commented on the Company's power amplifier (PA) market share: "We're in one out of every two phones manufactured, and we intend to gain market share in current- and next-generation PAs this calendar year. We are absolutely the leader in next-generation air interface standards, and there is no company with higher market share in GPRS, EDGE or WCDMA than RF Micro Devices."
On the topic of the Company's recently released Lead Frame Module(TM) PAs, Priddy said, "These are revolutionary new products and there is absolutely no other company in our industry that offers this advanced packaging technology. We are aggressively ramping shipments of our PowerStar® RF3146 Lead Frame Module PA and, with the introduction this quarter of our 3x3mm CDMA Lead Frame Module PA, we anticipate share gains in that market as well."
Finally, with regard to the Company's POLARIS(TM) TOTAL RADIO(TM) transceiver products, Priddy stated, "We fully expect to take share in the market for EDGE transceivers, based both on our product's superior performance and its ability to reduce our customers' bill of materials. Additionally, once POLARIS 2 is in full production, we fully intend to backfill our GSM/GPRS POLARIS 1 transceivers into those accounts. We believe our breakthrough technology, customer relationships and leading market share in GSM- and GSM-derivative air interface standards will enable RFMD to take share and consolidate the transceiver market."
Beyond cellular, the Company indicated that its addressable market for WLAN components has expanded to include cellular handsets. The Company is currently designing WLAN components for handsets based on the specific requirements of leading handset manufacturers.
