Americans have always been quicker than people in other countries to accept bankruptcy and start over. At least that was one of the things that surprised De Toqueville when he visited the United States about two centuries ago. Japanese ideas of honor make it harder.

But I really do not--of course-- have any great confidence in knowing the future. This elephantiasis disease of debt really does seem something new. It's the best I can do just to keep my family totally free of debt. I paid off my daughter's student loans so she would not have that ball and chain on her leg.
