The distinction that makes Kerry's war valor status an issue, is that the right has attempted to monopolize the veteran-military-tough on terror mantle. That's relatively easy to do with a wimpy and weak wanna-be like Gore, it may not be so easy with Kerry, or, in fact, the pugnacious Dean.
The other distinction is that it diminishes the effectiveness of painting Kerry as a silver-spoon elitist. Reminders that he lived and fought in the mud and slime of the rivers of Vietnam, and that his men stand by him, is powerful and should not be underestimated.
It also highlights the difference between the image that Bush projects as a tough, hardnosed patriotic leader, and his me-first, lap of luxury, hide in the guard actions.
I think all of this will play pretty well with a few undecideds. As you know, those few votes will determine our next president. The rest of us are split evenly and neither you nor I will likely change our minds. For sure people like Jlallen, Cyberken, Prolife, Bill, JDN, etc. will NEVER change their minds, even if it turns out Bush got a blow job in the white house, and Sylvestor, Buddy, Party etc won't change even if it turns out that Kerry is owned by the lobbyists. |
