I would think the more common story is like the one my younger brother, a musician, told me. They were playing in Reno, when their singer/frontman picked up their check and decided he could increase it at the blackjack tables, as he'd been winning lately. He proceeded to lose the entire band's pay for the previous two weeks. Needless to say, he lost the power of the purse that day!
