Jeff Greenfield said he'd just talked to a Bush campaign aide who made clear the country would soon learn that Kerry had opposed the death penalty for terrorists. "I am supportive of the death penalty for terrorists, and they know it," Kerry said. Actually, he voted against it in the 1980s.

Next up was Fox, where Alan Colmes asked whether he'd considered a Kerry-Edwards ticket and whether he'd urge his lagging rivals to step aside. Kerry said no to both.

Why do television types waste time on such speculative, clichéd questions when they must know that the candidate isn't going to give a real answer? "Yes, Alan, I think I may offer Edwards the vice presidency, and it's about time that Dean and Clark got out of the way." Right.

On MSNBC, Kerry deflected a Chris Matthews question about whether Edwards was mounting a "character attack" by saying Kerry was taking money from special interests. "I'm not going to comment on what's appropriate or not appropriate," Kerry said, adding that he hadn't taken PAC money in his Senate campaigns.

What about the three unnamed Kerry aides who told NBC that he "laid down" in South Carolina so Edwards "would feel good about being your running mate?"

"I don't have a clue who said that," Kerry replied without emotion.
